3. (indie) (5156↑, 713↓)
The term: Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff. History: grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just alternative(Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, No Doubt, etc.) and the other half that wasn't mainstream(by choice or not) became indie rock(Pavement, Sebadoh, Built To Spill, etc). Some bands have signed to major labels but are still considered indie(Modest Mouse, etc.). Go figure. Sound: In the begining indie sounded like alternative(because it was) but it grew more experimental and weird. In Britain indie has more of a typical sound like Radiohead, Muse, etc. rather than a definition based on 'the scene.' The scene: if you really think all indie kids do is try to be cooler than other people then... well.. you're mostly right. The main point is, don't take the scene and the whole hipster attitude seriously. No one does. And if you do, well, then I'm cooler than you.

just gimme indie rock

independent music. The anti-"emo". (well, maybe like emo's second cousin twice-removed with more talent, skill, and IQ) the state of being "indie": 1)being unable to talk to anyone about your music. 2)but knowing that, in the process, you're way cooler than the kids you try to talk to about it.

5. (Indie) (2654↑, 672↓)
A gloriously vague term for Independant Music. Basically unsigned or more obscure bands (It's odd that Radiohead and REM are considered indie...). While the indie scene is known for it's jackass elitism, this doesn't spill over and hurt what's most important....the music. One of the few generas left that can at least carry a fucking tune without screaming like a retard or crying. (Examples of Indie music) 80's- Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Smiths 90's- Pavement, Radiohead, The Pixies, Happy Mondays (Are they considered dance music or indie rock?). Now- The Shins, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie/The Postal Service, Rilo Kelly, Modest Mouse.

Indie Kid- "Do you guys carry Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by Pavement or Closer by Joy Division? Confused FYE Employee- "Uhh, no. We do have a wall of My Chemical Romance albums on the wall behind you". Indie Kid- "Fuck"

According to the dictionary, 'indie' is an informal version of the word [independent]. Although this definition is accurate, the word has come to mean more. For many, it has come to symbolize originality and forward-thinking, especially in music and design. By this definition, indie is any business or designer that is not associated with a large company. Indie can also define the consumer who chooses to support small business, independent record labels and handmade items rather than shopping at big-box stores.

I can't wait to attend the upcoming fashion show- there will be some great indie designers there and I'm looking for something unique\!

The bad-ass-est archeologist ever\! He found the holy grail, the ark of the covenant, and one of the lost shankara stones. His dad is a bearded goat with bad enunciation, but for some reason women like him. I guess they think he is cute like one of those troll dolls, not the ones with the jewel in the belly but the ones that people put on their lawns. some people call them lawn gnomes, but we know better. Indie has a whip and a gun, but sometimes he loses the gun so he has to run away. He has no scruples about bringing a gun to a sword fight. His best friend is this guy who lives in egypt and i think his name is Marsala. He had a monkey for a while, and a pet asian kid named Short n' Round, but I will not tell you what he did with him. Basically he ran around the world fighting the nazis and the pagans and stealing national treasures and heirlooms and stuff. Some king threatened to cut off his "misunderstandings" because he thought he was a grave robber or something. But I say, once something is in the ground it is fair game. Except corpses. Indie has about the same rules, though once he stole this asian guy's ancestor's remains. Then the guy poisoned him, so indie stole his woman. I think her name was charlie or something. Indie's full name is "Junior Indianna Jones," but his good friends call him Susan. They named a genre of music after him, apparently, but I dont know anything about that.

Indie, short for independant, applies to independant media, usually film or documentary and is also, more commonly, applied to a sub-culture (not a label) which involves generally music, behaviour (and in a few cases, style of dress). These people are also referd to as [Indie Kids] or [Indie Rockers], of which most dislike these terms as it labels them in a certian group, which the the opposite object of independant\! Most dislike the [mainstream] and the 'in-trend' and wear, listen to and do what they feel like without following fasions and rules (and im not talking about the law, Indies are just as likely to break the law as anyone else) and will always be themselvs and not put on an act for popularities sake. Obviously Indie is also a type of music which is generally soft-style rock without screaming or [moshing] sometime mixed with synthisised music and electronic, and is also generally on a independant record label and not well known. Altough indie is not a label it does have all sorts of connections to other groups and indie is commonly assocatied as a type of [rocker], Indies, along with most other rockers, are at a long lasting 'social war' with [chavs] and [scallies] and contrary to popular belief are not in a long lasting rivalary towards [Emo] or sometimes [Metalheads]. There are also Indie [wanabees] and [posers] which are not themselvs and just act it\! Just remember people... Indie is not a label, group or class\!

Emo - Ohh I really like that shirt but im Emo and people will get the wrong idea and not think im emo\! *Cries* Indie - Ohh I really like that shirt, whay only £4\! Im gettin it\! Poser - But its not indie or anythin, infact its quite sporty\! Indie - Ohh shurrup\! I like it, im gettin it\!

Usually late teens to mid twenties. A name often used for an artistic individual who thinks, and sincerely cares about issues one wouldn't find in the mind of most adolescents. A rare breed. Political junkies. Bargain hunters. All for organic (food, beauty and hygiene products, etc.) A very thorough knowledge of independent music, but most enjoy a variety of genres. Artistic and independent film buffs. A deep love for all forms of art. Most tend to be very witty, but this can come off as sarcastic and snobby. In high school, Indie kids were/are a bit awkward, because they find it hard to communicate with those who don't have the same ideals. This doesn't mean that they won't talk to you. Conversation is well liked among the Indie, but their ever churning minds are rarely understood. This is where humor comes in, and Indie kids tend to be very clever individuals who can come up with a funny little quip almost instantly. A lot tend to pursue stand up comedy. Also, an Indie kid will talk your ear off, sew it back on, then talk some more if music comes in to the conversation. Art is rooted deep within the heart of any Indie kid, and probably has been their entire life. Whether it be music, photography, writing, cinematography, painting, or any other art form that wasn't mentioned. Many become pretty successful artists later in life. The Green movement is also supported by almost all Indie kids. If art isn't their first passion, the earth is. The Indie style: It's not uncommon to see Indie kids haunting antique shops and thrift stores, for they love all things vintage. Earthy colors, buttons, plain t-shirts, torn fabric, knitted items, denim jeans, and comfortable shoes are all seen in the Indie style of both sexes. Vintage looking jewelry is also popular among females, but something handmade or of sentimental value is often preferred. Indie kids do care about their appearance, they just don't obsess over it. The Difference between Indie and Emo: Many have described these differences as a "war". This is not the case. If there's one thing an Indie hates, it's complete stupidity. Unrighteous self pity, and closed mindedness are all seen as stupid. Indie kids do like their style/music, but don't criticize other's for not liking it as well. They accept people of all colors, shapes, sizes, and styles. Though, once someone does show a decent amount of shallow emotion, an Indie kid will stop speaking instantly (this is bad.) There is no war, just a frustration with the traits that often come with the Emo style. All in all, an Indie kid doesn't need much to be happy. Good friends, good music, good food, good conversation, and good laughs. True bliss. A simplicity that this world seems to lack.

Indie kid1:This is a good Harmony Korine film. Indie kid2: Want to watch it? Indie kid1: Sure, I'll go brew some tea.

The stereotypical name for an individual, because some dumbass actually invented a stereotype for someone who belongs to no stereotype. An individual is someone who likes their own thing, maybe they skate, but like to wear a lot of black. Normally they dress in whatever fashion they like and do whatever they enjoy doing. They see that there is no need for so many people to belong to a stereotype, and will normally refer to themselves as normal as in their own eyes they don't belong to a stereotype, but to other idiots (usually townies) they do, and that stereotype is called indie.

Townie: Look at your long 'air, what are you, a skater? Me: No, I'm not anything, I'm just normal. Townie: So you is a indie, ay? Me: Whatever you want to call it.

is another soicial class like chav, goth, emo ect.. people who are indie are not trying to follow along with any fasions or trends, they where whatever they like, they dont take any shit from anyone, unlike most goths, emos and chavs which are all trying to be somthing and have a false personality covered in crap, indie people just do what they want when they want, no this dose not include people trying to make a political statement by wearing a pink shirt to school. Indie people are often cool too, and would not be embarresed like most people today by there parents and own personal intrests.

CoolKid1:My parents wouldent mind if any one drank a few bottles of booze and passed out at my house, they dont give a shit to what i do. CoolKid2: Yeah my parents too. CoolKid3: Yeah my Parents let me have parys with loads of beer too whenever i want them, and they dont care what happens. IndieKid: Well if it was my parents they would call an ambualnce if someone passed out from drinking too much. --------------------------------------- CoolKid1: Starwars is so gay, im glad i never liked it CoolKid2: Yeah me too, never even see them CoolKid3: Yeah only nerds are into that stuff, i dont even know why they bother making it, no one ever watches it. indieKid: I used to be into the star wars films a few years ago, i kind of went off it though as i was disapointed with the newer films. anyway i prefer more realistic films. --------------------------------------- IndieKid: I hate those fucking emos, no one wants to here how there lives are so "shit", or why they need sympathy. I used to have a friend who went Emo, he still has the same personality but it is coverd in all that emo shit, so i cant even talk to him now without hearing about how his life sucks and how he is so depressed. --------------------------------------- Chav: Oi nob'ed, ah ah ah, nice trousers, stitch it up mate ah ah. Indie kids have their own sense of every other group. They may think jocks are too dumb, cheerleaders are too whorish, emos are too pathetic or skaters are just a little out of control. They don't really fit in anywhere. Even around other indies they disagree on who is better, Death Cab or Cutie or the Snow Patrol. You'll find them in Urban Outfitters, watching Epert and Roeper, or at a library. They would rather express their own opinion, which is usually more educated than most, then try to fit into one group. This can be annoying because for the most part they are normal, functioning members of society. However, if you ever wanted to do somthing that is mainstream, such as dance at a club or play a sport, even those harmless things are too common for them. Its also a shame because they are usually educated enough to support why they like the Shins and go against the group, but they usually find flaws in everything that isn't in accordance with their own differing beliefs. Nevertheless, they are better than the extreme, devoted goths, skaters and chavs because at least they are down to earth and know that acting like that is gonna get you nowhere. The female indies usually end up being financial consultants and the male ones are usually english teachers.

Average Guy: Hey dude, wanna throw a football around? Indie: Sorry 'dude', I'm trying to decide if Kerry's policies go against his counterpart's own ideals, before my interview at Brown at 4:30. I'd prefer something that can benefit me in 15 years more than tossing around something so pointless. Average Guy: Well whatever, see you later outcast. Goth: Hey you should wear some black eyeshadow, it will help show your rebellious side. Indie: Rebel against what? I like my life and don't hate my parents. Don't be such a waste. Normal Guy: Hey, I didn't see you at the dance. Indie: God, I can't stand dances, the music is too loud and too idiotic, the women act like whores, the men act like animals and I would rather be anywhere else. Normal Guy: Whatever man, I had fun. Indie: I'm sure you would.

It's so hard to be truely 'indie' these days, isn't it? Its seems every time you try not to conform, you're conforming to something else - the non-conformists\! Confusing\! But the only way to be indie in a small way is to just do what YOU want, dress how you want, listen to the music you like and everybody else can bugger off. The world doesn't have to see you as cool, there are always some people who think you are. Nothing to do with scene kids, emos or whatever the hell constitutes as 'indie' these days. Used to describe 'individual' or unsigned bands, but also, strangely, a genre (usually rock n roll or similar) that may or may not be mainstream.

Abstract kids. nothing like them in the world. everybody says theyre always so smart and this and that. but u dont have to be a genius. you should just have strong opinions and the strength to back them up when they are questioned. indies just cool in general. it mostly deals with liking things that arent the norm. or dressing the way you want to dress. and being indie means that u dont like lables because they just suck. they chill at nifty places like shows, libraries, the ipod store, and urban outfitters. they dress different. no indie dresses alike so theres no real way to explain it, just that when you see an indie kid youll know its an indie kid.

Mainly consisting of high school and college students, Indie is a current and very popular social group among the unpopular social groups. Usually characterized by local or obscure music, eclectic clothing from thrift stores or the nearest Urban Outfitters, and constant bickering between one another on which bands are becoming too mainstream. If you are considering becoming an indie kid, be prepared for many long arguments over various books, movies, music, paintings, and obscure pop culture icons between other members in the group. Oh, and be prepared for hearing loss, as you will be expected to attend many local shows and concerts.

"Hey Jane, how was the Cavil At Rest show last night?" "It was good, but their newest song sounds so mainstream,, Like they are changing their sound so they will get a record deal" "Isn't that a good thing though? I mean, doesn't every band hope for a record deal?" "Not Indie. Its about the music, not the fame."

it has been said many different ways. But "indie" is very broad and encompasses a lot. Its not always a person who tries to go against the main stream-but just someone who likes what isn't popularized... Indie is what something is before its watered down and presented for basic and massive culture. Yes some people who like indie music are proud and can be sarcastic to those that do not try to further their tastes beyond mtv, radio and mega cd stores. Indie-"kids" tend to hunt out more for music. Indie can also appeal to hip hop, electro, baile funk, and every catagory-since it justs means independent.

it's a word shortened from independent for a reason. indie isn't something you can copy or try to be and it's not supposed to be a sterotype. you can't try to dress like an indie kid because then you'll be a poser. and there's no real definition because indie is whatever everyone else isn't and whatever you are. everyone is trying to make it into a style and it's about the music anyways, and originality

Indie is a term used to describe Independent music. It is music that is less commercial and generally has a more unique sound but will sometimes end up sounding like other indie bands. Now most people on here are basically using bands like Arcade Fire, The Shins, ect. to describe Indie music. However the word indie means much more than alt rock, and basically includes like a million subgenres. Indie can be rap. Indie can be folk (it is a lot of the time). Indie can be pop. Indie is often international music. INDIE IS NOT JUST ALTERNATIVE ROCK. Unless you are referring to mainstream "indie" bands. Then usually they will be.

Kid \#1: Well what bands do you like? Indie kid: The Vaselines, Belaire, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Aesop Rock, Devendra Banhart a lot of random indie shit. Kid \#1: Indie? Oh like The Arctic Monkeys right??? Indie kid: No.

Although often defined as a certain musical category, technically indie would apply to all types of music without a record label. So a person rapping on the corner of a steet without a record label could easily be considered indie just as some weird obscure band. But most people are dumb and dont realize this, so the word indie in general usually applies to rock bands no one heard of.

Lame Biter Bitch: what type of music do you listen to? Me: what ever i feel like. Lame Biter Bitch: so like whats your favorite band? Me: um, modest mouse i guess. Lame Bitch: oh, i listen to indie, like boys like girls. Me: you are a dumb bitch. that did not make any fucking sense.

1. Short for independant, usually music, as in independant label, independantly produced, etc. It DOES NOT have a particular sound since it really only refers to label and production (bands such as [Modest Mouse] and [Of Montreal] sound nothing alike, yet they are both indie). 2. Can also refer to stores or businesses that aren't part of chains. 3. Listeners are not flowery scene kids, as is generally believed. However, listeners MAY be [stoned]. 4. Is awesome.

A misnomer for a particular style of music. It formerly was used to correctly classify music that was "underground" and not supported by major music labels. Popular thought in recent years has been that it is itself a style of music, usually 80's throwback, alternitive-style music. Any band in any style of music can be indie by virtue of not being signed. The style is not important; it is independence from major labels that makes a band independent, or "indie". This idea has been lost due to the popularity of the term indie as it is used today. The reason it became so popular is because to like indie music, in its correct sense, was respectable because you're bypassing the corporate music machine and finding music that you like on your own. As more and more hipster-type kids wanted to appear as deep as possible, they would answer the question "What kind of music do you like?" with "Indie." As time went on, this answer became so popular that the music that many of them listened to started to be referred to as indie. After a while of this, bands that are on major labels started to be absorbed into this pseudo-genre, rendering it an oxymoron. Since the loosely associated music that is referred to as indie cannot properly be grouped and classified, a more appropriate label for what is erroneously referred to as indie would be "scene." The [scene] kids are often more concerned with being opinionated and elitist about their music choice than they are about the music itself. Scene fashion trends include tight pants, square-rimmed glasses, tight vintage-looking t-shirts, newsboy caps, military-style caps, and tattoos of stars, guns or bullets, and especially birds. Making the "scene" (i.e. a concert),being popular, and being narcissistic are the main motivations of scene kids. They often do their best to display that they possess these qualities on social networking sites like MySpace.

Jim: You should check out this band. Frank: Oh yeah? What kind of music are they? Jim: Indie. Frank: OK, so they're not signed... I mean what genre are they? Jim: Dude, I told you. Indie. Frank: You're such a tool. Billy: Oasis is like, the coolest indie band ever. Mark: Man, you are totally clueless. Billy: Please. Music is my life. I would die without music. My taste is superb. How dare you criticize me? Mark: Wow. You're hopeless. I'm leaving. Billy: Good. I have to blog about how awesome the concert I went to last night was and post the 30 pictures I took of myself there on MySpace.

Music of bands on independent labels. It is often mistaken as emo however, indie music is just better than emo music at so many levels and in so many ways. The lyrics are meaningful, clever and the tunes are generally pleasent and clever for the ears too as opposed to the fakely depressing, nasal-sounding moanings and whinings which emos call music. I'd say all emos should just go kill themselves because they obviously have no knowledge of music.

Cool Kid "Oh yeah, what's the name of that song by that indie band My Chemical Romance?" Indie Kid (-thinks "fuck off and die"-) says "fuck off and get some musical knowledge. And grow some charisma and perhaps some sticky outy ears while you're at it. But you're not smart enough to do all those things so you might as well just die." Anything (band with independent label, style, person, etc.) that is 'independent'. Bands are considered indie if they are independent label and make almost no money at all. Kids generally call themselves indie when they shop at thrift stores. After their escapades in the thrift store, they then buy thousand-dollar Nikon cameras and a polaroid. They take loads of pictures from strange angles, take pointless pictures (such as shoes), and take provocative pictures (but to them, it's not provocative - it's indie). These people then bitch to normal people about how 'normal' is overrated and that listening to mainstream music shows that you have no individuality. Apparently, the only way to be an individual is to buy cheap-ass clothes that have been worn by who knows how many people, waste your time and money, and preach to others.

Indie Guy: What are you listening to? John: Dynamite by Taio Cruz - man this shit has a sick beat. Indie Guy: Wow. Way to completely turn over your individual soul and personality to the corporate music industry. Find mental maturity through real music by bands that nobody knows. John: Dude. Shut up. Indie Guy: I'm gonna go take some pictures of some stupid shit like dirt now. John: Stupid ass indie kid.

Indie started out as being an individualist (hence the name indie), wearing what you want and listening to what you like (but mostly unheard of or obscure bands) but now has become more of a fashion which some people like and others do not. British Indie is sort of a mix between mod and punk. The style of a mod and the attitude of a punk. The music listend to is the smiths, blur, the cure and bands which are heavily influenced (by agian, mod and punk bands) like the libertines, the others, the cribs, the coral, the paddingtons and bloc party amoungsed many others.

What a very select few achieve. Mainly "claim" to be indie, but they really aren't. In a couple years indie will become old, and the people that are still there are the true indies. At the moment it is the cool thing to be, the people that are it don't even truly, deeply, respect the music, they are in it for the glory of being indie. Maybe.... I dunno. Anyway...yeah. The true indies are getting a bad rap from people who are poser indies. Die you poser scum, emo kids too.

most are down to earth, like people who recycle, use non-harmful to enviornment products etc. yes it does stand for independant, usually these people do not like labels and go for the labels suck routine, they listen to a lot of bands that are "underground" such as the hush sound, and death cab for cutie which are some of the more popular bands. no not all of them are bitchy and don't listen to other people's opinions although some are. most are pretty open-minded to others opinions but prefer to go along with there own. they are usually out-casts that don't fit in in any stereo-typical group. many despise the "hot topic" scene because they think it's just for a bunch of depressed people who can only think about death, you can usually find them hanging out at: urban out fitters, coffee shops, libraries, or shows. most tend to be on the computer a lot. as i have always said indie people come in different varieties, they made this stereotype for the people who didn't really fit in in just one area. and i must say that they have the best fucking music i have ever heard. :]

short for independent music. contrary to what most people say about indie kids, they're actually very nice people. there are a few indie kids who look down on others because of their "exclusive tastes in music and culture". but generally, most indie kids are "indie" because they are INDEPENDENT and dont care what others think. they're nice people who will hold a conversation with anyone about anything, not just music. not all "indie kids" have wavy hair and wear converse. indie is whatever you want it to be. its about being true to yourself and the things that you truly enjoy.

there is no way to BECOME an indie kid. indie is INDEPENDENT, so just be yourself :)

In a common sense, "Indie" stands for a musical stream of bands who use influences of different older bands (mostly from the 70's, 80's). Most of them are considered "pop", but their music is "handmade" and they often belong to small record labels. They also express their independence in creative clothes etc. I think you can be indie in many different ways when you - don't do something just because everyone else does it. - create your own favourite style in music, clothes, ... - build up your own opinions and stand behind them. etc.

Cool Kid: So what music do you listen to? Indie Kid: Oh, there are many styles I like... i think Franz Ferdinand are very catchy at the moment... Cool Kid:I think the new album by Good Charlotte is awesome. Indie Kid: I used to listen to this band when I was 13, but now I'm a bit outgrown. - silence - Cool Kid: I heard you are also into Indie? Indie Kid: ... Cool Kid: I recently bought some CDs by Adam Green, he's so cute and so indie... But his music is really lame, I think. So do you want to have them? Indie Kid: (chuckles to itself) No, thanks.

1. Used to describe a music genre including Alternative/Rock/Punk elements. Include bands such as: The Smiths, Radiohead & The Libertines. 2. Clothes including Mod elements, often non-branded items. Indie kids may visit shops such as: Beyond Retro, Urban Outfitters or Fred Perry. Examples of indie clothes are: Pointy brown shoes, Skinny jeans, Polo tees or checked shirts, leather jackets. 3. Word mistakenly and wrongly used by underage kids to describe themselves as "cool". Often those who go to shops such as Topman, or read NME as it is so cool.

Indie means independent right? so it means pretty much any band that releases an album or song independantly without using major record companies. so a rocker could release an album by himself and its Indie. A rapper could then theoretically release an album by himself and he'd technically also be indie. A techno song could be Indie. so could pop, grunge, metal, jazz, etc etc. as long as its released independently. So why the FUCK do people keep calling it a genre?

Person 1: My favourite genre of music is rap. Person 2: I hate rap, i loooove Indie though. Especially Atmosphere. Person 1: But he's a rapper........

In Britain: An alternative type of music that often has deep meaningful lyrics or can have ironic story like lyrics. Vocals tend to be mild, somber and heartfelt and music involves guitars /and or piano and drums. Acustic guitars are a favourite. The result is downbeat, beautiful rock that has alot of meaning. People that listen to indie can be anyone; but people that wear cord blazers, worn jeans and scarves are often catorised as Indie. Oh why do we have these genres???

Indie is short for Independent. Nothing more nothing less. In the sense in which I am typing I am referring to music, for the sole reason of mis-interpretation. First things first. You cannot like "indie" music. I mean... I guess you can. But it is unreasonable to say. Thats like saying you only like music distributed by Tooth and Nail records for example... Indie is not a genre; no matter what the media wants you to believe... Now. What most people will consider "indie" music is alternative rock. Or mellow acoustic. Or dance. But in reality "indie" can be hardcore death metal, reggae, rap ect... Also. You can't be "indie".

Okay. I guess I will name some bands that someone might consider "indie" even though I'm completely contradicting myself... Milosh, The Snake The Cross The Crown, The Red Paintings, Why?, Godspeed\! You Black Emperor, Happy Mondays, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Q and not U, Token, Silp and Tra, Feel from, Owen, Pedro the Lion, MGMT, cLOUDDEAD, David Bazan, The Replacements.

the art of pretending to be a professional photographer, photos of converses & derelict buildings on your social site is a must. The art of listening to such obscure bands that the next step in Indieness is listening to non-existence itself, Very few have acheived this. The art of drinking starbucks & once that becomes mainstream home-growing your own organic coffee beans. The art of extreme self-denial, A true indie must learn to let go of his or her favourite obscure band once they cross into being a well known band & then rant at how they sold out from their roots. The art of feigning intelligence, To be a real indie one must watch foreign independent films, possess but not necessarily read or understand influential books (see Ulysses/Walden/Communist manifesto & others) & be able to act intelligent on a subject for a minimum of five minutes over a cup of coffee before your true knowledge on the topic is shown to be extremely limited & flawed The ultimate paradox, of claiming to be unique & not following trends. Yet then adhering to the above statements

The indie scene had originally been started by people who wanted to deviate from the norms of society. They did this through both music and fashion. Contrary to popular belief, indie was never just about listening to bands nobody else had heard of - it was about appreciating all music for what it was - a form of entertainment, that appeals to different people. This spawned a generation of Indie kids, who would go out of their way to try and be as "indie" as possible, essentially conforming to the acceptable indie standards. The indie scene quickly became the one thing that it set out to differentiate itself from - a clique. What most "indie" kids dont realise is that looking indie, and listening to indie bands just isn't enough. You can't just "become" indie - you either are, or you're not. Being "indie" to try and conform to the indie scene is not indie, because it defeats the point of being indie. Indie is about being independent, therefore, following your own style and own opinions. Someone who is really indie will dress how they want to, look how they want to (though i guarantee that the jeans, hoody, messy hair look will be popular) and listen to whatever music they want to. most importantly, to not care what others think, and to be universally accepting to every genre of music, and not just write it off because it doesn't fall into a certain category. Being truly indie is really like being "none of the above".

Guy 1: That girl's indie because she listens to arctic monkeys and wears dresses that look like they're from the 1960's Guy 2: That doesn't make her indie, that just means she looks like someone who has been inspired by the indie scene Guy 3: Look at the indie kids gathered outside starbucks. They all look the same. guy 4: They probably aren't all indie then, most of them probably just like the idea of being indie.

a label that people just don't understand that fucking concept of. "indies" tend to dress in plaid flannels, wear thick rimmed glasses, any "vintage" band tees, bandanas, ray bans, converse, etc etc. although they strive to stand out & not follow trends, they usually turn out to look just like every other "[indie kid]" out there, much like [emo]s, [scene]s, etc.. individual doesn't mean go out there and dress in vintage clothes, it means to do what YOU want do. not to do what OTHERS don't do. most people who claim to be indies try way too hard to not be like others. long story short, a true individual is open to things and doesn't try to be anything, just do or dress whatever way they want.

'Indie' kid: yeah i went to Urban Outfitters, i'm soooo indie\! True individual: oh their clothes are pretty cute. how is it indie? 'Indie' kid: because no one shops there and im sooo original for wearing their clothes. True individual: haha a lot of people shop there ya'know.. 'Indie' kid: fuck. 1. A term used to describe a band/artist/etc. who does not belong to a big name record label, or no label at all. Though all these shitheads who put definitions here years ago all talk about a relation between "Emo" and "Shit rock music" they are wrong. Indie is not only rock. For every genre of music there is, there is an underground ('Indie', for people who can't keep up) scene behind it. Indie could also refer to the indie culture around it. As much as people want to swear up and down against labeling and the such, it just is what it is. There *is* an indie culture in lingo, interests, CLOTHES, etc. Many people like to spot an "Indie Kid" as anyone in their teens to mid twenties: -wearing faded skinny jeans -scruffy hair -a cardigan, military jacket, pea coat, etc. -wearing boots all the time -walk around with an ironic expression on their face -drink. And then drink some more. Those are just some of the things a "typical" indie kid would wear or do. Additional Information; Hipsters are the ones who are somewhat hard to tell apart. Hipsters may look and dress like an Indie Kid, but are somehow different. They may even listen to the same music as Indie Kids, but apparently they are still different. Hipsters are normally the ones who are just about as indie as Indie Kids except for perhaps one thing (which takes away their indie title): Listening to mainstream. That's it. Listening to the occasional mainstream.

Indie Kid \#1: Oh yeah, I love the Teenagers, incredible stuff there. Hipster \#1: Yeah the Teenagers are great\! I like the Kooks as well... Uptight Indie Kid \#1: The Kooks aren't "indie" anymore (scrunched look). Thinks: (Silly hipster girl) "Hipster" \#1: Yeah and? Are you one of those indie kids who have serious issues against mainstream? Indie Kid \#2 (who is much cooler): Yes, yes he is. C'mon, you wanna go to a Hadouken\! gig with me? Tomorrow we can go to the Teenagers show. *friendly smile* Uptight Indie Kid \#1: Oooh\! Can I come to the Teenagers show with you guys\!? Indie Kid \#2: No.

indie, short for independent, is a normally classified as a music genre. indie music can be anything; rap, folk, pop, punk, international, etc. but is normally labeled as obscure and alternative rock. indie bands are not signed to big record labels, hence the name independent. but now, indie has become another stereotypical label like emo, goth, prep, and the list goes on. before indie gained popularity, it simply defined people who were independent and did what they want. 'indie people' dress how they want, wear their hair how the want, listen to what they want, and be their own person. 'indie people' are very unique and most are individualists. no two 'indies' are the same. independent movies and films have also been given the label indie. independent movies are films that have not been made popular and are made outside of large theater companies. indie movies are made with smaller budgets and no corporate funding.

i can't describe indie music, movies, or stereotypes because they are all different.

Indie is short for independent. Popularly used as a short term for "indie rock", although this is meant to be inaccurate. Some people are unaware that indie rock is just rock music whose artists are on an independent (or indie) record label. Indie is not a genre of music. It can be hip hop on an independent record label. The latter is a record label which operates without funding by major record labels. There are also indie films, indie art, etc., which are films/art/etc which are independent from commercial, mainstream establishments (just like indie music).

Indie is a word that has a slightly different meaning for every person on the planet. Here is my definition, Indie is simply being oneself, however only people that are "independent" enough from the norm are recognized as Indie. You do not have to like obscure bands to be Indie, you can like a bit of everything and still be Indie, even [pop music], Indie isn't even solely defined by what music you like anyway. It's one aspect, but the clothes you wear, the language you use, your personality. Still, only a few people can be Indie, and you can't learn it, your just born with it. Within Indie, people are still not completely independent of each other, take [Pendulum] for example, alot of people like them, alot of indie people do too. Indie people share interests and do not all like completely different things, here is what I believe the formula for Indie is, 20-15% [pop culture], 80-85% personality/personal taste. It's similar to Ribena, pop culture is Ribena, personality is water, without the pop culture(Ribena) , you and Indie(water and Ribena) will taste nothing alike, Even Indie people need some common ground, or being Indie would be boring, and without the water(personality) your just generic old pop culture, you have nothing to offer the Indie community. But then again, that's just how I define Indie.

Normal guy: Hey, sup Indie: Not much, just listening to some [anamanaguchi] Normal guy: That names retarded Indie: Have a listen (plugs in earphones) Normal guy: Hey, that's pretty cool and [chiptuney] Indie: Yeah, it's good [shizz], well, I'll be on my way, see yah. Normal guy: Wow, he was nice, pretty cool too, he just had some indescribable aura about him.

Indie (Independent) a social movement hijacked by the recent generation of trust fund children, subsisting on checks from their parents, in an attempt to credit themselves with creating something original and/or being 'independent'. Indie kids are identifiable by their shabby garb, coupled with their ray-ban glasses and brand new cars.

Phil- "Man there go those indie kids riding their fixed gear road bikes to the local coffee house" Dan- "Amazing how they're all paying the rent for their houses by being 'writers' 'singers' and 'songwriters'." Phil- "I know.. it's almost like.. their parents pay for everything" Dan- "Oh well, lunch break's over and those bills don't pay themselves"

derived from the word 'individual' usualy reffering to an unsigned band or film, there is really no such thing as an 'indiekid' because indie is not a style but a genre of some sort of art music, film making etc. If you call yourself an indie kid then you are most likely a tryhard loser. Oh and if you own rayban sunglasses and/or a pair of docmartins, this does not make you indie infact quite the opposite. A real indie kid, if there was one would do their own thing dress truely different to everyone else and not get angry and write them letters of abuse if someone copied them. Oh and if you use im or shortened words i.e. wt, omg, devo etc. you are NOT indie and never will be.

Tryhardindiekid: omg I totes like found death cab for cutie before they were cool i was like the first one to listen to them and now everyones totes into them thanks to me I'M SO ANNOYED THEY'RE COPYING ME OMFG Actualindiekid: Well I highly doubt you 'found them' seeing as they formed the band and unless you're personally friends with them I also highly doubt you were the first one to listen to them. Indie: Mutated Preps who have diverged from the "mainstream." Any popular music, art, literature, etc. is automatically dismissed as "mainstream"--even stuff that is slightly popular. Unfortunately, all they have succeeded in doing is branching off and establishing their own separate mainstream. Indie isn't necessarily considered a genre of music and it's hard for Indie folks to define anything about themselves, because they're so self-righteous and stoned all the time. There is, of course, music of "Indie" and it strives to relinquish itself of any themes or messages that can be found among "goth" listeners, "metalheads," "emos," etc. They think they're "above" everyone else, because they have overcome their "dark" emotions--but what they don't realize is that there is NO SUCH THING as "bad" feelings or emotions; only bad ATTITUDES to emotions--which is precisely what they have. Indie folks assert that they are "happy" but it is a pretentious and lofty sort of happiness that reeks with pride. If you display any sort of emotional instability in their presence or listen to music that they don't like, you're almost immediately severed from their circle of friends. If there is one good thing about Indie, however, it's that they give some power to the underground scene and that they are generous with their weed--alas, you cannot smoke with them without hearing their political rants and speeches on how the world ought to be like them.

A genre of music self produced, written and released by a band. It originally meant any music produced in this manner, but now has come to be used in the sense of bland, samey music that somehow seems to be taking the charts by storm. Its sound is either acoustic with an irritating high pitched singer with a painfully fake English or American accent (take your pick) with side or boring, repetitively electronic with an irritating high pitched singer with aforementioned accent and a side order of sythpop campness. Its band names also have to be ridiculously stupid and long, and have to conform to the following criteria. 1) It has to sound like every member of the band sat down and thought of a random word, then they slapped them together and whacked it on the promotional leaflets that the members of said band hand out to people who don't want them. 2 ) It has to be completely unrelated to the bands music, and their personal beliefs. 3) It has to be so ridiculous that ordinary people laugh. This is so that Indie kids can look down on us mere mortals, saying that we are 'scene kids' and that they are 'so unique' when in fact they are conforming to a wider spread class of people anyway, especially since Indie has hit the mainstream. Its followers seem impervious to the genre's complete silliness, and they generally wear brightly coloured clothes, glasses when they don't need them, especially of the thick rimmed 'nerd' style, which mere years before would have got them a good beating, and have a penchant for cardigans which would, mere years before have got them branded as a homosexual. They refer to slightly more mainstream people than themselves as 'Scene Kids' and express their hatred of them often. They like also to wear t-shirt of band no-one, not even other Indies have heard of. This they think lends an air of legitimacy to their claim to be Indie, even though to everyone else it just makes them look a bit of a wanker.

Indie kid: Awwww check it out, it's Marxist Gas Tap Patrol's new album Other Indie Kid: Wow...have you seen my new Hypocritical Taxidermist t-shirt. Indie Kid: who? They must be so unique, cos' I've never heard of them before. Other Indie Kid: Yeah they're kinda like Polka Dot Revival, with some Iranian Giraffe Squad thrown in. Metal Guy: What a stupid name for a band. And that t-shirt makes you look like a wanker. Indie Kid: Oh yeah? Metal Guy: Yeah. But whatever, I'm gonna go listen to some Bloodsoaked Death Spleen. Indie Kid: What a stupid name for a band. And so the cycle continues.

1. a noun, being a person who does not believe in the affiliation or support of things in the [mainstream.] characteristics: going to see local musicians at venues, wearing clothing bought exclusively from thrift/bargain stores, trying to become as intellectual as possible. you'll find them: in libraries, at "shows," at flea markets. pseudo indies often wear/go to urban outfitters. 2. a noun, being something (such as a band or movie) that hasn't been signed to a major label/company. these generally have a certain style and often express much more emotion than art of the "mainstream." movies: will have very unique characters and the storylines will be in-depth and devlopmental to the characters. music: using a lot of emotion in the voice, without sounding whiny, and are more often described as "beautiful," also, aren't generally 'heavy' sounding, often with acoustic instuments and a variety of percussion.

1. some well known indie bands include: sonic youth, joy division, rilo kiley, etc. 2. examples of indie movies are: movies directed by wes anderson, movies that win sundance awards

Generally considered to be what the [emos] of years gone by have grown up into, and with it recieving the same ignorant hatred etc, "Indie" simply refers to Independent Music, i.e. music which hasn't been signed to a label. Of course some people try to fit into this by "being" Indie, but really it's not something you can be. Such people typically have floppy, greasy hair, wear silly jumpers, [chinos] and [vans] and usually suffer from delusions of grandeur and smoke inexpensive roll ciggarettes whilst talking about how individual and different they are. Whilst not truely Indie, these people have come to earn the term "Indie" a bad name and with it have ruined anyone who happens to enjoy that type of music innocently, without being a pretentious poser.

My friends and I were discussing our Musical taste one evening in the pub when some Indie posers came over and started telling us how much cooler they are than us. Naturally, we told them to go get haircuts and come back once they'd washed.

The hippest way of being hipster. You're so hip that you can't call yourself a hipster (because hipster is soooo mainstream) so you call yourself indie. Typical indies can be seen sporting their AE hoodies, invisible children bracelets, and toms as they spend hours studying for their next AP Government Exam. Indies listen to music similar to that of hipsters but include bands they make up on their own, such as the Rotten Tomatoes. Some indies don't even listen to "bands" and have moved on to a totally different genre of music that isn't real but is conceptual and psychologically based.

I don't care if Colin is a hipster, because Abby and Cory are indie, thus making them ten times cooler.

next time you walk into forever 21 or heritage 1981 I better not hear the sentence: "this is so indie" fall out of your mouth. Indie isn't a package of certain clothes, shoes, and bands. Indie is unique. Indie kids are NOT in any way, shape, or form an emo kid. They don't listen to Drop Dead Gorgeous, The Devil Wears Prada, or any of that screamo shit. We prefer to slap on some big headphones with Ben Folds voice ringing in our ears. Classic punk bands will even suit us. Indie kids don't listen to the bands with the crazy straightened hair, colorfully patterned sweatshirts, or scary skin tight leather pants. NO THANK YOU. Indies prefer a nice cardigan, loosely fit skinny jeans, and a comfortable shirt. (NO, ASHLEE SIMPSON ISN'T INDIE\!) Indie boys do prefer their hair long, but don't suffocate it with hairspray. Indie girls do sport bangs or side bangs, but don't dye the crap out of their hair and straighten it to death. Also, indie kids wouldn't be caught dead in anything emo-related, such as hello kitty, skelanimals, or anything sold at Hot Topic. Urban Outfitters is a pretty indie store, but as soon as all the emos take it over, the indies are moving on to something better. Unlike emo/scene kids Indie kids are not OBSESSED over myspace. Yeah we probably have one, but don't have a "whore code" or on a "train". Max adds don't tempt us, if someone adds us, then sure, I'll accept, and we won't deny because they don't have a lip piercing and never talk to them because they're not "emo" enough. Please, we're all fed up with the emo myspace whores selfishness and vanity. Indies are selfless and honestly, most of then i know, think they're pretty ugly but are confident nonetheless. Now if you're some pathetic scene kid looking up indie, because you think it'd be cool to be one. Press home and continue being the unoriginal person you are.

A genre' of music as well as a 'fashion' and part of an individuals personality. Most 'Indie' people consider themselves the gurus of music and that their genre' of music is the only one able to be appreciated as 'real' music. Indie's give off a very elitist asshole attitude which is unbelievably annoying. They claim to only listen to 'underground' music that isn't widely popular or common, which is contradicted by bands like Radiohead or artists like Adam Young from Owl City. According to Indie kids, Adam Young is a sell-out? Basically, if you're an artist who makes money, you are no longer considered popular amongst Indie kids. Also, Indie people like to put themselves above the other social status of 'Emo' although they appear to be insanely similar, besides attitude. Also, 'Scene' kids seem to differ from Indie. Basically, you have to be a total douche bag to be an Indie kid who likes to put themselves above everyone else because they have a depressing home / school life and they've mastered the art of alienation. In essence, an Indie = Emo / Scene without the whining emotion, and more of a stuck-up princess attitude.

Person: Hey, a friend told me you liked Modest Mouse? Indie Kid: Not anymore? Person: How come...? Indie Kid: They're sell-outs and totally unoriginal...don't talk to me about 'good' music. Person: ...I see... O.o lol?

Nothing that can be defined. It's a stereotype for those without one. Indie (independt) people are themselves and nothing else. Someone who's indie can shop wherever they want not just your local thrift store or no name record store. They can go to Hottopic or Ambercrombie and still be indie. They don't have a dress code. They don't have a style. They're just them.

Indie is fake, their not about the music their all about the scene, nobody in an indie clique actually understands anything about music theory so their opinions about music are literally null to anyone else. Indie parties tend to be boring gatherings of about 10 people smoking a bong and passing around a blunt and talking about "philosophy" which if it is heard by anyone not under the influence will sound totally inept and possibly retarded... indie is shit, indie is garbage, indie is not the new punk movement, indie isnt even a movement, its just bullshit, \\ if you get angry at all or lose your cool with indie kids they will slowly but surely outcast you... indie kids all want to start bands but they all disagree and have so many different and pretentious musical tastes that anything a group of these so called indie kids makes ends up sounding like shit... even the bands that indie kids listen to which are bands like mogwai, modest mouse and the flaming lips, think indie sucks, because its a fruitless movement a waste of time, the people that make the music that the indie kids listen to are usually the types of kids that the indie cliques outcasted and forgot about, because they werent chill enough, that is the fatal flaw of indie, indie is a trap... and it will suck you in like a cheap whore. all you have to do is wear shitty clothes and smoke weed...

Indie is the stereotype for people who belong to no stereotype. There is indie music, and there are indie films and designers. Some artists that would most likely be considered indie are Pinback, Andrew Bird, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, etc. A lot of people say that an indie kid can't actually say that they are an indie kid, because that is accepting a label and indie kids are against labels. Personally, I'm really into independent music and films, and I was before it was classified as "indie", so I proclaim myself to be an indie kid. It's nice to have people ask what indie is. And otherwise people seem to think I am either emo or goth.

TFI, Heavy Metal, Punk, Emo music, Pop and any other music that hasn't really got any REAL lyrics besides, a screech, a mumble, a sware word, and something to do with love. Indies wear whatever they want and are the smartest people you could think of without being nerds\! Most indies, don't even know they are indies because of their strong dislike of labelisation. Indies are very cool, and so different from eachother, the only thing they would have in common is listening to Alternative Rock, and hating lots of other music genres. If you are a moron, you would only listen to music that sounds like something you've heard before which is already shit by someone who doesn't know how to sing, but 'makes up for it' by screaming loudly, mumbling, or playing his instrument really loudly to cover his voice up. If you are smart, you'd listen to whichever music sounds new and you don't know which style it is. 9/10 says it'll be alternative music.

Not actually a musical genre. Stems from the meaning of independent labels, which can apply to any REAL musical genre, from punk to metal and their subgenres, to underground hip hop etc. Bands such as Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The Academy Is, etc, are/were commonly labeled as Indie, but most bands that commonly fall into the "indie" label are actually just as easily (and correctly) labeled as art-rock or experimental. Indie kids, however, are generally pretentious, stuck up (and by no means more educated/intelligent than anyone falling into another social group) copy-cats that think they know everything about music, movies, life, etc. One commonly sees them dressed up in earth tones with suspenders, sporting such "outdated" fashions as corduroy, and those slanted hats commonly associated with grandfathers and [old-school] newspaper boys.

indie labels: anything that is not funded/ran by large corporations and multinational businesses, even more popular labels such as Epitaph and Fat Wreck-Chords would be considered independent labels ----- Indie kid 1: "Hey Chuck, did you hear that new Arcade Fire CD?" "Indie" has become a vague term. It stands for a type of music, a type of lifestye, and even a whole "look". The Type Of Music:Independantly recorded, on the mellow side(unknown, independant recorded:hip-hop/hardcore/emo bands are \<b\>not\</b\> Indie\!) The Look: The Indie look is all about vintage. That means thrift stores, T-shirts of obscure/old bands,Blazers (you wear it over the T-shirt) ripped/tight jeans, shaggy hair, big sunglasses.(think The Strokes. The Strokes lifestyle before becoming famous was the epitome of Indie, they owned nothing that was made after 1980, they were slumming in new york apartments, and some were heavily into Heroin) The Lifestyle: Most "Indie" kids are: White. Drive old cars. Live together in rented out, very old homes/or shitty apartments, and are extremely poor and slumming. Many indie kids are heavy into drugs. Indie kids are very exclusive with who they choose to hang out with, and sometimes form "Crews". Indie kids sometimes listen to Gangster Rap, sort of as a joke. (haha) Some bands that have the "Indie" sound, but are technically not Indie because of their popularity are: The Shins, Rooney, Modest Mouse, Hot Hot Heat, The Strokes. Etc.

Type Of Music: \<i\>Sean\</i\>:My bands going on tour soon \<i\>groupie\</i\>:oh really? is anything you play on the radio? \<i\>Sean\</i\>:Hell no..we're Indie fuck corporate radio, we're all about the music, not the popularity or money\! Indie is the most boring version of rock ever to been played throughout Europe. Indie-fans mostly wear second hand clothes and weird army caps. they also tend to dance by simply going a step forth and then a step back, repeating the whole process for about 8 hours, or untill their club closes. While still being just some spoiled middle-/upper-class-kids, they think of themselfes as being different of any other consumers (which they are not). People who Listen to indie are always of caucasian background. there has never been any asian, african, southamerican Indie-fan or Indiegroup. Indie-fans only like music that is the washed out and never contains anything more then the Amaj Cmaj Gmin Dmin Emin chords, or a slight deviation of those chords If Indie were Food it would be a soup cooked just with water and flour with neither spices nor salt, also someon wood have spitted in that soup.... A sub-genre of non-mainstream music recently brought into the mainstream with such bands as The Killers and Franz Ferdinand. Its fans tend to be the pickiest of any kind of music, rejecting any change in the sound or lyrical content of their favorite bands that makes them sound even slightly "mainstream." This form of music has thus gained a reputation of snobbery.

I would tell you about my favorite band, whose music I love, but you've never heard of it and thus you are not worth the telling.

Indie bands range anywhere from the more pop-like Death Cab For Cutie to the melancholy melodies of elliott smith. "hey look at that indie kid." "how do you know he likes indie?" "look at him, he is wearing ripped up jeans, an old band that no one has heard of tee shirt, and he hasnt brushed his hair for months." "yea, hes indie alright."

Complete distaste for any style or clothing, these melancholy creatures are the kids that couldn't seem to find a place for themselves or develop a tasteful outfit. In result, they thought it would be a good idea to visit the opposite side of the spectrum and wear lumber jack plaid, nut-hugging jeans, and off-the-wall vans (In which none of the colors of each article compliment any of the others i.e.: Maroon & Lime Green & Faded Hot Purple ) in compensation. Sadly they are a mistaken bunch and do not realize how ridiculous it looks when an indie couple are walking down the street and the male's crack is swallowing those jeans even more than his girlfriend. Also, Indie IS NOT A GENRE OF MUSIC.

indie is just being independent and walking in school or a job and not like caring much about what other people think of you and u will talk to them untill they will tell you to fuck off and even then u wont really care much anyway. indie kids really listen to bands that no one really knows like the shins and other random stuff\!

Short for Independant Rock. Music that is made by people that are too untalented for realy rock and too self aware to become [emo]and listened to by people that think they are way too hip for any other music, when in fact they are all tools. The staple lyrical content for the Indie genre is that off very sad relationships which becomes worse than emo becuase it's posed as being independant although it is all the same and in reality all very dependant on each other and huge record labels. Most obvious bands that are Indie include The Kooks Razorlight

Tomos "Dude\! did you hear the new indie band last night" Sean "No\! I was too bussy having a life and not trying to be obscure and failing"

Not a very noble pursuit at all; living every breathing moment to go against the "mainstream." The major flaw in this logic is that in trying so hard to go against the mainstream, indie kids act according to what everyone else is doing. Your not very hip when everything you do results in stooping to the level of the so-called mainstream that you feel so superior to.

A style of music geared towards pretentious university/college idiots who think they are hip and original by listening to boring, snoozeville music. Many of the individuals who listen to this music feel they are superior in intellect to others. If you dog their music, they will just tell you that you don't get it and that your mind is too small to understand. Most indie scensters are snobbish and think that they are some type of musical elite. The reality is, college kids get sucked into this music because they feel they are finding a new identity that makes them different than the other "brainwashed, money humping, corporate idiots" because they really can't define themselves as a person.

Indie dude1: "Hey man. I saw Matt Pond PA the iother day. It was awesome." Indie dude 2: "Yeah man. Matt's lyrics are so genius; they're almost counter-cultural." A normal, sane person: "Indie music is boring and retarded. You all are just college snobs looking for an identity because you have none and no personality\!" Both indie dudes: "He just doesn't understand man\! His mind needs to be freed."

A kid that goes out of their way to make themselves feel superior to others, usually via music no one's ever heard of. Once they've done that, the victim proceeds to listen to the band, which pisses off the indie and ceases all mention of the band, ever again. Forever.

Indie: *changes the song on their MP3* Oh I love this song\! \<---- (said very loudly.) Kid: What song? Indie: Oh... this song by Boy Kill Boy. Kid: Who? Indie: You haven't heard of Boy Kill Boy?\! Kid: Ummm... no? They're good? Indie: ... you've never heard of Boy Kill Boy?\! Kid: No\! Indie: You'll like them, I'll send you one of their songs tonight over MSN. (A few days later) Kid: I bought Boy Kill Boy's album yesterday... I really like them\! Indie: Oh they're so fucking emo, get over it.

An elitist. Most claim to 'just be themselves', but really STRIVE to be unique. They brag about how different they are. They listen to bands no one has heard of to feel superior. They also irrationally hate any other kind of people and music. Extremely annoying people for the above reasons. You really are not cool. You are NOT better than anyone else, and you're music is not better than any other. I'll be honest here; I've been called indie - and I might even be as I don't fit into any steriotype. But that's because I really do only do, listen to and wear what I like. I do not really like indie music that much - I like what I like; which can include all sort of stuff, but mostly varied forms of metal, rock and hard rock and also swing. I don't think I'm cool, especially not because I'm different - and I don't have to claim that I'm unique to make myself feel good or superior. I'd also like to mention their is nothing wrong with emo music - though I do not listen to it much myself. Also, as was implied in another submission, Trivium and Cradle of Filth are not emo. Both are bands which I quite enjoy.

I'm indie; I'm so cool. I'm different and I only like things that no one else does - but thats really what I like of course. I hate goths and emos and chavs and preps and and genre of music other than indie.

Despite roots in the word "independant", indie has become anything but that. Being indie now involves listening to music that is top of the chart and so mainstream it is actually impossible to enjoy eg. snow patrol, arctic monkeys, and wearing clothes and hair exactly the same as the person walking alongside them, whatever their gender may be. Strangely, clothes, hair and music is now extremely similar to [emo], only less black. Being indie commonly involves worshipping [NME] like it is holy scripture, again reducing their once independant status to mindless sheep.

Indie kid: "Man I've just heard the new Arctic Monkeys single, it's great how they understand and manage to emphasise the chav culture whilst pushing fun at it" Anyone else: Shut up.

indie is the greatest type of music ever. it is short for independant and is different to other music. `indie` bands normally dont have labels or didnt and know do. new bands are kaiser chiefs and arctic monkeys indie is also a social group like goths or chav. these are independant and do their own thing.

As a fashion statement-- indie is the less pathetic step-sibling of emo. It dresses better, is smarter, gets more dates, and has a slightly firmer grip on reality. It must be said, though, that although Indie doesn't cry at shows like Emo does, he/she will go home and cry ABOUT shows while writing in his/her journal. (see excerpt below)

The Fruit Bats show tonight was so fucking amazing. There was this one part when they went into like this twenty minute jam session and..oh my god. I actually died a little. *tear strikes the page. the ink bleeds. indie cred skyrockets*

Indie is a genre that allows people to pick u a cheap guitar, sing/talk in a nasal manor. In Britain it is popular to do this with a thick colloquial accent such as Cockney or Geordie. Indie is about being different, only in the same way as everyone else who is indie. Indies, as indie lovers are known, pride them selves on their openness to “new” music, so long as it sounds like The Clash or has a synthesiser badly played in an annoying 80’s manor all the way through it. The fast guitar solo was outlawed in indie in 1989. You can only be an indie guitarist if you have a tinny nasty guitar tone and play slightly out of sync with your drummer. Indie bassist died out in 1987 and so they are left with a computer putting in 1/8th note repetitions. Indie fashion: It is Topman fashion that isn’t purchased from Topman or other such high street chains. Charity shop clothes are preferred however if you spent £70 on a pair of 1965 socks from Christies auction house that’s ok too. In the indie world or the uk, NME tell you which bands to like and dislike, strict adherence to this is strongly recomended otherwise you may be seen to be disturbing the independance of indie

Pete Doherty is the king of indie. the Axel Rose of Indie Famed for not turning up at gigs, or when turning up being off his face. Fans love him for "the intimacy of the gig" (meaning only 5 fans turn up and the rest of band get pissed off and leave) and "the pain of his story" lets all turn up and feel sorry for a guy will be joining the 27 club. Also famed for breaking into a bandmates house, stealing and selling his guitars for heroin. Kate Moss and Pete Doherty king and queen of cool in theindie world\! or so say NME

a type of rock music, which is defined by the "independent" labels its published by. listening to indie music is often a badge of membership in certain hipster social circles. indie rock bands often evade commercial success (intentionally or not), but the instant they become popular with anyone not in the "in crowd", or they get air play on commercial radio, their old fan bases dissolve, accusing the bands of "selling out".

Indie (independent) rock. While once more of a meaningful genre with independent bands on independent record labels, it is now emo's up and coming brother, loved by both annoying scenesters and mainstream fans alike. Being on a mainstream label kind of defeats the purpose of being called "indie."

Indie = independent (usually rock-orientated) music Indie rock = full one oneself (at least quite often)

To "be cool" with the other indie rock folks, I must have an extensive record collection with minimal well-known rock titles, have a working turntable and plenty of vinyl to go with it, easily dismiss others, think I'm better, over analyze others, and overall have an attitude that makes people not want to associate with the scene. ... nice job, everyone. nice job

indie is another word for independent. someone who wants to be something other than wot everyone else is. the problem is theres only so many things u can be so in the end indie is just another word for someone who thinks there different by wearing all the same stuff the other different people wear.
